When everything external is gone, what remains?
There are moments in life when everything outside is extinguished: titles lose value, applause falls silent, relationships change or leave. You find yourself in the silence and vertigo of emptiness. That kind of emptiness feels like an end, but it holds within it an opportunity. When the external collapses, what never collapses is revealed: who you are.
But it's not about the character. It is not about the "I" that is used to identifying with what has been achieved, with the name, with the body, with history. When that total silence finally occurs, a question more alive than any achievement appears: who are you if nothing is left out to sustain your sense of value?
Sometimes the answer dissolves into fear. Other times, in sadness. It may be that the world seems to tell you that you are nothing without your papers, without your relatives, without your triumphs. The body may hurt, the mind may scream. But it is right there, at that extreme, where the truth can begin to appear.
The fear of losing everything is the guardian of the door. Not to harm you, but to invite you to look inward and ask, honestly and crudely, for the one thing that cannot be lost. Here, on this threshold, the Holy Instant occurs. A blink in time where true reality is revealed: that core that you are, indivisible, eternal, intact in God.
The Holy Instant is not an extraordinary experience. It is the most everyday thing and at the same time the most forgotten. It's the inner place where, beyond fear and stories, you remember that all that really matters is who you are, and who you are is in God. It is the silent place where illusions disappear, and salvation is no longer needed, because there was never danger.
The Outside Trap: Everything You Thought Made You Valuable
The world has always taught us to look outward for value. From childhood, the rules are engraved: he adds merits, he highlights, he achieves, he seduces, he defends, he achieves. Titles, the body, money, prestige, family, image: one by one they become trophies, shields, responses to an anxiety that never completely calms down.
Every now and then, the outside seems to offer that longed-for relief. A new job, a breakup overcome, a special relationship, academic or professional success. Brief decreases in anguish and insecurity. But it never stops there, it always demands more. If you lose it, you feel like you're losing meaning. If you keep it, you're afraid you'll lose it one day.
The trap is subtle but powerful: you confuse what happens to you with who you are. If you do well, you celebrate. If all else fails, you condemn yourself. Every shift in the outside world seems to augur well for you or your downfall. And so, courage is never really in your control, it is never permanent, it is never true peace.
But precisely there, when the trap is revealed, the Holy Instant can appear. It is the radical now—the only point where everything external shuts down and you perceive that your Self was never defined by anything temporary. You are like a secret fountain buried under pounds of memories, fears, and stories. Nothing stains it, nothing loses it.
In the Holy Instant, the illusion of external value is shown to be mere appearance. The stage clears, and only the silence remains, the purity of Being, the inner certainty that you already are, that you are in God. That is the unalterable value. Only there is room for fullness.
The ego: that master of illusion and fear
The ego embodies the old habit of seeking, protecting and fighting, convinced that without achievements and recognition there is no valid existence. He works like the director of a survival film, always alert, moving the pieces to please and stand out.
Where does it draw its strength from? Of the fear of not being. To the constant comparison and the infinite threat of being forgotten, belittled, excluded. The ego feeds on the drama, on dependence, it makes real the lack and separation that were never true.
And to perpetuate itself, it projects. The internal – the wound, the doubt, the pain – is turned outside: making use of others, of temporary successes and failures, of the struggle for belonging or rejection. Everything external becomes his battlefield. If money is lacking, the ego screams. If loneliness lurks, the ego reacts. He cannot stand silence or emptiness, because there, his kingdom is tottering.
But everything that depends on what happens outside is doomed to disappear. The ego may be ingenious or domineering, but it will never lead you to permanent peace, because it can never be founded on the truth of your eternal Self in God.
The Holy Instant appears when you stop fighting and simply allow emptiness. Something deep opens up: the memory suspended from your roots, from your invulnerable innocence. You discover that what you were looking for outside was not necessary. The ego dissolves, even if only for a few moments, and the truth of your Self in God shines through, without noise or effort.
The only real value: Being united to God, eternal in the Holy Instant
Imagine for a moment being naked, stripped of all labels: without your story, without your name, without your relationships, without your body or your ideas, without your triumphs or failures. What is left? The real thing: your Self.
But that Being does not exist in isolation, it is not an autonomous creation subject to the ups and downs of life. Your true Self dwells in God, in the unchanging, in the eternal. It is what you were before every temporal event and what you will always be, even when the form changes, even when the body is turned off and memories are erased.
This is the core of the teaching and experience of Un Course in Miracles . What you are cannot increase or decrease—neither with praise nor with abandonment, neither with health nor with sickness, neither with presence nor with absence. Your Being in God is absolute value. Nothing can threaten him.
Sometimes, in the midst of the routine, you perceive the sigh of this memory. An instant where for a second thoughts are silenced, fear is removed, anxiety does not exist. That is the Holy Instant: the real, unrepeatable moment, where your identity as the Son of God, eternal spirit in the divine, is revealed and impregnated with a peace that cannot be lost.
The Holy Instant is not a prize for the righteous or a goal to be conquered. It is reality always available, even if forgotten, waiting for you to let go of the impossible search outside and surrender to the truth of your existence in God.
From illusion to awakening: recognizing and embodying the eternal Self in God, here and now
This path is neither theoretical nor intellectual, nor a sum of personal conquests. It is the explicit surrender to the demand to find value outside. Only there, when you allow yourself to do nothing and rest in who you are, can the Holy Instant be lived: the sacred now where all separation is suspended and wholeness is directly experienced.
Question the root of your worth
Give yourself permission to answer honestly: what do you really think you are missing? What do you need to achieve or show to feel worthy, fulfilled or safe? Don't judge the answer. Allow discomfort to be expressed, thus old pacts with the ego arise.
You can ask yourself in the void, when something is lost, when fear presses... Is there still Being even if the external vanishes? The Holy Instant occurs when the question remains unhurried, and in that silence arises the evidence of your eternity in God: you are what you are, always, under all circumstances.
Let go of the fight: stay in the Holy Instant
The ego will ask you to react, to resolve, to prove something. Don't fight him, just watch him until he gets tired. Do not change anything: stay in the space of the Holy Instant, without wanting to control, without looking for the urgent answer, without moving outside.
That instant, although brief, reveals the difference between the borrowed value and the real value. When the ego turns away, the truth of Self emerges, simple, silent, unshakable.
Cultivate Self-Acceptance: Remember Your Eternity in God
The root of self-esteem is not a self-deception or a social construction, it is a deep memory of unity: you are part of God, you always were, it was never lost. That doesn't depend on history, successes or failures, or physical appearance, resources, or relationships. Your goodness, your innocence and your eternity are guaranteed by the Love that created you.
When the Holy Instant is allowed, that truth breathes on its own. You see others again not as rivals or threats, but as brothers in the same source. All complete, all perfectly innocent, all eternal.
Recognize unity: stop looking outside
The mind addicted to separation cannot access the Self. Only in communion, in the memory of being in God, does the Holy Instant illuminate all the gaps. There is no longer a rupture or distance, nor a struggle to stand out. You are simply included, embraced, impossible to lose.
Live in the present: in the here of the Holy Instant
The Holy Instant is not a technique or a goal, but an always open door. Live the present as the dwelling place where your eternal Being shines, inseparable from the Love that sustains it. Let go of all expectations. Let peace come for no reason and accept that there, nothing can separate you from the truth.
Experiential practices to embody the eternal Being and open yourself to the Holy Instant
Radical silence and pure presence
Each day, set aside minutes for silence. Don't organize, don't control, don't expect any results. Breathe, let the breath bring you here. Ask:
"What is left if everything disappears and only this instant remains?"
Feel the weight of the body, the echo of thoughts, the dance of emotions. And let it all settle. The Holy Instant appears without warning: it is the radiance of your Being in God, the evidence of peace that does not compete, the absence of struggle.
Self-Inquiry Test for Eternity
Make a List of everything you think gives you value . Imagine losing it, even if it's uncomfortable. It allows the ego to stir, fear to scream. Stay there:
"Can I exist, can I be loved, even if none of this remains?"
Don't run away from vertigo. The Holy Instant will reveal to you a small light, the memory of the eternal, intact in you.
Mantra of truth in the face of the temptation of the ego
When something hurts, when you feel loss or fear, repeat slowly:
"This cannot alter who I am in God. My Being is eternal."
Do not seek to feel better, just let the mantra inhabit the Holy Instant and, little by little, bathe you in peace.
Recognition Meditation
Sit in the stillness. Close your eyes, let go of the story. Visualize yourself without age, without a name, without history or future.
One Being, eternal, in God.
Stay there. If noise arises, let it be. The Holy Instant is pure presence where the reality of the divine pierces all fear and gives you back the courage that cannot be lost.
Living from the Being: Fullness, Freedom and the Trust of the Eternal
Life goes on, but you no longer hand over the helm to circumstances. Losses don't define you, successes don't inflate you, relationships dance, the body plays. None of this determines your existence. True courage, peace, and joy are founded on the only reliable thing: your eternal Self in God.
The demands of the ego have been let go. Freedom is quiet, without stridency. Fullness is not a goal attained, but the natural experience of knowing yourself to be complete, complete, loved, loved, indivisible. Relationships are now accompaniment, not salvation or conquest.
From there, everyone else—the whole world—sees each other as companion in the same eternity: each being is a spark of the great fire.
Everything belongs, no one is superfluous, no one is missing. Pain and joy alternate, but peace becomes the deep water that never dries up.
The Holy Instant sneaks into everyday life, without pomp or ceremony. It is that real space where inner truth imposes itself, where innocence manifests itself, where quiet trust is enough. External noise no longer drags you down.
In Being, everything becomes simple, natural, present.
Are you going to choose the Holy Instant and remember your eternal root in God?
You don't need rites or speeches. Just honesty, simplicity, courage to let go of what was gone, what never was. Even if you forget, even if you fall, even if the ego claims, you can always return to the Holy Instant. It is the timeless space where God sustains you, as He always has, where your Self is evident and peace is inevitable.
There Nothing external can alter your heart . Nothing is lost, nothing is fought. You can see the dance of life, its coming and going, but the real home is not on the surface. Courage is what inhabits you, what you were never able to spoil or conquer. It is the light that shines quietly, without permission or effort.
The Holy Instant is always open to you. Your Self, one with God, eternal, full, innocent, is the only value. You just have to stay, allow the silence. Breathe in there and let love do everything else.
Don't search, don't justify, don't demand answers from yourself. Truth enters on its own when it is allowed, and the only real thing always remains, waiting for you in the sudden present of the Holy Instant, when you allow yourself to Be.
