Lesson 1 ACIM · Guided study and self-inquiry test

Send your inquiries about A Course in Miracles

Have you ever stopped to think why, after many books, courses or promises of spiritual growth, the feeling of emptiness or dissatisfaction returns again and again? Why, even though you cultivate spirituality, do you continue to suffer in the face of things that, deep down, you know are fleeting but to which you give immense weight?

If you recognize yourself in that concern – or even in the skepticism of this type of question – this text is for you. Because the first lesson of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) not only has the potential to transform your spiritual practice , but to restore peace to your mind when you need it most.

Today you will discover that the great spiritual shift begins, precisely, where we never expected to look: in the silent but ironclad value system that sustains the ego and perpetuates separation.

Lesson 1 of the ACIM workbook—that brief and puzzling "Nothing I see... it has meaning" — is an invitation to revolutionize your way of perceiving. It's not about denying your feelings or your reality, but about inviting you to question the foundations on which you build your world.

The spiritual goal here is none other than Undoing Separation-Based Perception . And, above all, to undo the attraction and dread we feel for objects, people and events, sustained by the ego's thought system.

  • Your invisible hierarchies (that which you consider vital... and that seems trivial to you)
  • Your tendency to suffer and fear, feeling that "something outside" can hurt you or make you happy
  • The chain of automatic judgments that, day after day, reinforce your egoic identity

Let's see how this seemingly innocuous practice can open the doors to your awakening.

Perhaps the ego's greatest trap is to make us believe that there are things, people, or situations that "matter more than others." The text calls it the "hierarchy of illusions" and warns us that There is no one who does not believe this.

  • You give priority and special meaning, depending on the ego, to your body, your status, a relationship, a professional achievement, or a part of your story.
  • You believe that protecting, defending, or satisfying that special thing will bring you security, love, or happiness.
  • You live under alert or anxiety in the face of the threat of losing what you have put at the top of your hierarchy.

This belief is not innocent: it creates separation, fear, and guilt. But it is so automatic, so accepted, that we do not even question it.

Do you really feel the same if you cut your hand as if you break a pen? The comparison alone illustrates how deep and emotional these hierarchies are.

The radical proposal of ACIM is to thoroughly question each of the values, beliefs and hierarchies that you protect almost without realizing it.

For what?

  • To discover that none of those beliefs are neutral, but rather dictate every decision, reaction, and emotion you have.
  • To deactivate the origin of suffering, which is not what happens to you, but the meaning you have given to it.
  • To open your mind to forgiveness, fairness, and true vision: to see beyond appearances, choosing peace.

This questioning is not a self-attack. It is a therapy of honesty, humility and self-observation.

Why is it essential to undo identification with the ego?

  • Because as long as you continue to believe that you are the special thing about your story or your objects, the fear of losing them – and the anxiety to have more – will dominate your life.
  • Because identification with the ego keeps you trapped, trapped in a cycle of separation: "this is mine", "this I need", "this I fear".
  • For only when you see the equality of all that is illusory can you let go of attachment and allow your true spiritual identity to shine through: your Self.

The undoing of the ego is not a process of destruction, but of gentle, intelligent detachment.

The central part of the lesson is revolutionary: All things, relationships, and circumstances in the world are equal in their lack of real meaning . That means that there is no great or small loss, no real success or absolute failure, no sacred or trivial object.

Everything, absolutely everything, is part of the same illusion that seeks to perpetuate the separation.

What does unbiased perception achieve?

  • Break the mirage of differences, choosing to see with the mind of Spirit, not of the ego.
  • It facilitates real forgiveness and detachment, which are the basis of spiritual awakening.
  • It allows you to go through fear without denying it, knowing that what seems threatening or vital is only a reflection of old beliefs.

If everything is the same, nothing can bind or condition you. And from there comes true spiritual freedom.

It is not enough to understand. Transformation happens only from constant practice and honest inner contact.

How to bring it into your day-to-day life?

1. Do the exercise as suggested by ACIM:

  • Look around you without excluding anything: everyday objects, body parts, people, memories.
  • Repeat internally: "This (the lamp, my hand, the book...) it doesn't mean anything."

2. Observe the internal reaction:

  • Do you notice resistance, disbelief, even fear or anger? This indicates the power of your hierarchy of illusions.
  • Acknowledge it kindly, without forcing change.

3. Be sincere, sincere:

  • Could you really treat a pen the same as your hand? Or your mobile phone than your body?

4. Reflect:

  • What do you value most? What things take away your peace?
  • Relate your level of suffering to the degree of specialization or importance you give them.

5. Always apply kindness:

  • Keep it easy and short, without turning the practice into a mechanical routine or seeking perfectionism.
  • Remember: the lesson should bring calm, not anxiety.

A common mistake among ACIM students is to turn lessons into a succession of empty rituals.

Jesus warns this clearly and lovingly: The practice should not be a disconnected ritual, but an invitation to presence and living awareness.

  • The mechanical ritual only anesthetizes the mind and avoids real contact with the material.
  • Rituals perpetuate disconnection, because you repeat without feeling.
  • True awakening requires honesty, attention, and above all, inner sensitivity.

Tips for a genuine practice:

  • Go slowly, without haste or pressure. If one day you only manage to do the exercise with one object, that's fine.
  • If guilt arises for "not making it perfect," observe it and remind yourself that kindness is the new habit.
  • Trust the process, even if you don't see immediate results. Every act of conscience sows seeds of peace.

Perhaps the greatest contribution of this lesson is not so much the challenge of impartiality, but the gentleness and kindness with which it invites you to practice it .

Jesus emphasizes that lessons should be done with kindness... Don't try to make them perfect, don't feel guilty when you think you've failed.

This is real self-care:

  • Give yourself permission not to know, to make mistakes, to move slowly.
  • Take every resistance as an opportunity to observe yourself, never as a reason for judgment.
  • To understand yourself as a woman, a man, learning to walk on a new ground.

Kindness opens the heart and allows the light of Spirit to begin to envelop even the darkest corners of your perception.

Practicing the radical equality of the illusory and the principle of kindness will bring concrete fruits in a short time:

  • Much less fear of loss, rejection or failure.
  • Growing capacity to forgive and let go of what previously seemed indispensable.
  • An inner sense of peace that no longer depends on the world "working" the way you want it to.
  • The growing certainty that your courage and your love are invulnerable.
  • You communicate calm and serenity to those around you, also fueling their own path of awakening.

Get back to basics: your peace is within reach, here and now

Accepting that "nothing you see has meaning" is not a renunciation of love, beauty, or joy, but the gateway to a freedom that nothing and no one can take away from you.

Undoing the tyranny of hierarchies, practicing impartiality without forcing and being gentle with you are the first bricks of the new house of your mind.

Are you willing, are you willing to look honestly at what you take for granted and embrace the peace that comes from ceasing to make special what is not?

The journey is just beginning. But the simple act of starting to question your old values is already a miracle in itself.

Take the next step in your practice: Choose your real peace, live without ties

The most important thing already dwells in you: continue to the next lesson

Dare today to look at the world from impartiality, honesty and kindness. Be amazed by how your load is lightened by practicing this lesson and allow your new commitment to carry you into the next one: each lesson is a deeper awakening.

Your heart—and the world—will thank you for your courage.
